About us

Our vision is safe, effective and kind nursing and midwifery that improves everyone’s health and wellbeing. As the professional regulator of more than 725,000 nursing and midwifery professionals, we have an important role to play in making this a reality.

Our core role is to regulate. First, we promote high professional standards for nurses and midwives across the UK, and nursing associates in England. Second, we maintain the register of professionals eligible to practise. Third, we investigate when nursing or midwifery care goes wrong – something that affects less than one percent of professionals each year.

To regulate well, we support our professions and the public. We create resources and guidance that are useful throughout people’s careers, helping them to deliver our standards in practice and address new challenges. We also support people involved in our investigations, and we’re increasing our visibility so people feel engaged and empowered to shape our work.

Regulating and supporting our professions allows us to influence health and social care. We share intelligence from our regulatory activities and work with our partners to support workforce planning and sector-wide decision making. We use our voice to speak up for a healthy and inclusive working environment for our professions.

About the role

Our Professional Practice Directorate is at the heart of our ambition to use modern approaches to regulation to shape practice within the nursing, midwifery and nursing associate professions.

As part of our regulatory function we set the knowledge and skills requirements that nurses, midwives and nursing associates have to meet to access our register, alongside setting the standards of behaviour and conduct enshrined in the Code, and standards for revalidation. We also approve over 85 education institutions covering over 1,000 nursing, midwifery and nursing associate programmes. We approve these institutions and programmes against our standards, and then continue to monitor them to ensure our standards continue to be met.

This is a really exciting time to be joining the Directorate as we look to the future, exploring regulating Advanced Practice, reviewing the Code and reviewing our approach to revalidation.

We’re therefore looking for a Senior Nursing Adviser to work alongside our existing team of senior professional advisers and standards specialists. You’ll have a key role in providing up-to-date professional expertise and advice to the NMC executive and Council, and all of the NMC’s operational functions. This includes contributing to the ongoing development, review, implementation and evaluation of all the regulatory tools and standards relating to education and practice. It also includes engaging with external partners and stakeholders.

If you’re an experienced nurse, used to working at a senior level and wanting to explore new challenges then we’d love to hear from you.

About you

You will be an experienced nurse, with a demonstrable experience of management and leadership in a complex organisation, with a passion and drive to advance the profession.

You will also have a proven track record of building and maintaining high level relationships and working in partnership, alongside evidence of successful development and implementation of strategic plans.

It will be a condition of employment that you maintain your NMC registration.

You will:

  • Hold current NMC registration
  • Hold a nursing qualification with postgraduate experience
  • Be enthusiastic and motivated, with the flexibility to adapt to the challenges of a fast-paced environment
  • Be an independent thinker, with excellent interpersonal skills, which inspire confidence
  • Be a confident and clear communicator, who is able to influence colleagues
