An External Examiner is required for the Specialist Lymphoedema programme at the Nursing and Health Care School, University of Glasgow. We are part of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing, within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS). For further information regarding the College, please visit www.gla.ac.uk/colleges/mvls.

We offer four lymphoedema courses on the programme which allows exit points with Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Post Graduate Certificate. The first two courses establish a grounding in assessment and management which are offered at level 3 (SQCF level 9). There are then two subsequent advanced courses which can be undertaken at level 4 (SQCF level 10) or at post graduate level (level 5; SCQF level 11).

Our Specialist Lymphoedema programme aims to prepare health care professionals to identify those at risk of developing lymphoedema or chronic oedema and to provide appropriate supportive care and management. A variety of learning opportunities are provided using a combination of supported workplace learning, University attendance and on-line virtual learning. This provides an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge, skills, and confidence in practice, whilst expanding their professional networks. All learning opportunities are designed and delivered by experienced academic and clinical staff with expertise in lymphoedema and related clinical and research fields.

The ideal candidate would have clinical experience working within the field of lymphoedema and have experience of teaching and assessment in the higher education sector on either a nursing or allied health academic programme. Previous experience of external examining is preferred. The candidate should have current registration with an appropriate professional body i.e., the Nursing and Midwifery Council or Health and Care Professions Council, and a higher education teaching qualification.

Possession of a Masters degree is essential.

The appointment will be for four years, from September 2024 and will cover all courses of the programme. Appointments are subject to the University Senate’s criteria for external examiners.

The commitment required is normally as follows:

  • Review and moderation of a range of coursework and assessments throughout the year.
  • Submission of an External Examiner’s Annual Report.
  • Membership and attendance at Boards of Examiners.
  • Collaboration with the Lymphoedema Programme Lead to inform the continued monitoring, review, and enhancement of these courses.

Interested applicants should submit a CV and letter of interest by e-mail to School Administrator Marion Yakova, marion.yakova@glasgow.ac.uk, by 30th April 2024.
