External Examiner – Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship and External Assessor for End Point Assessment

We are seeking to appoint an External Examiner for the Apprentice Registered Nurse Degree, which is planned to be delivered from September 2024. This programme is based within the Division of Nursing, Department of Health Sciences, College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences

Our current apprenticeship provision has been awarded “outstanding” by OFSTED as part of the wider provision of apprenticeships.

It is a 3-year programme, which on successful completion leads to eligibility to register with the Nursing & Midwifery Council. This position requires the external examiner to be an Adult Nurse holding current registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council, with a recordable teaching qualification and experience of the apprenticeship standards

As External Assessor you will operate in line with current External Quality Assurance of Apprenticeship End-Point Assessment for Integrated Higher and Degree Apprenticeships guidance (https://www.officeforstudents.org.uk/publications/external-quality-assurance-of-apprenticeship-end-point-assessment-for-integrated-higher-and-degree-apprenticeships/).

You will be involved in: reviewing EPA documentation; reviewing a sample of EPA assessed work, including observing live assessments; observing assessor standardisation/moderation meetings and exam boards where the EPA final decision is confirmed; meeting independent assessors, other EPAO staff, apprentices and possibly employers.

The appointment will be for four years from August 2024, and the commitment required is as follows:

  • To review a range of coursework throughout the year, including Recognition of Prior Learning claims
  • To attend via Teams an assessment panels throughout the year and to submit an annual external examiner report.
  • To engage in communication with the programme team.
  • To carry out an interim visit per year, either in person or by virtual means, to meet with staff and students to obtain feedback on assessment in practice and to strengthen your engagement with the ongoing teaching, learning and assessment processes.

The University provides an External Examiner Induction/Briefing seminars to support those new to external examining and experienced External Examiners.
