The School of Health and Life Sciences is seeking to appoint a Degree Assessment Board External Examiner for our collaborative, validated BSc Dental Nursing programme which commenced in September 2017. New College Lanarkshire (Coatbridge campus), in partnership with the University of the West of Scotland are providing a 1-year full time & 2-year, part-time, top-up Bachelor of Science degree to meet the professional driver extended role demands of dental nurse preparation.
A brief overview of the programme is detailed below –

The General Dental Council’s (GDC) Scope of Practice has increased and expanded the legislative range of duties that a dental nurse can perform. This change has resulted in the dental nurse enhancing their clinical role by being more involved with patient care; this extends from supporting treatment planning to the management and prevention of oral disease. The BSc Dental Nursing programme will offer graduate education to meet the needs of local and national markets as well as the growing public demand for specialised treatments. It will also have relevance to the international market due to the transferability of clinical and theoretical knowledge and skills which can be contextualised to individual country requirements.

This cutting-edge dental nursing programme facilitates the development of professional and intellectual abilities that are underpinned by evidence-based learning. It will serve to develop the student’s ability to respond to the dynamic dental and health needs of the populations in an analytical and innovative way. The modules are designed to encourage the student to develop critical and analytical competence and graduate attributes.

The BSc Dental Nursing programme encompasses the following modules:

SCQF Level 9
20 credit Research in Dental Practice
20 credit Dental Nurse-Specialist Skills
20 credit Oral Health Promotion
20 credit Technology in Dentistry
20 credit Leadership in Dental Practice
20 credit Professional Development

External examiner responsibilities include moderation of assessment methods/samples/results and completion of an annual report. A schedule of module confirmation events per academic session will be made available and external examiners would be expected to complete external moderation in line with these dates. The School uses an electronic marking system associated with the originality checking programme Turnitin, called Grademark. External examiners are required to make use of the system during the external moderation process (this being accessible through the Virtual Learning Environment).

Experienced and new external examiners will be considered provided the applicant has the relevant professional qualification(s) and experience. Relevant professional experience in the fields of dental practice and higher education and a valid teaching qualification are essential requirements for this post.
The appointment will be with effect from 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2026.

Full details of the programmes and modules will be provided to appointees and an online induction will be provided by the University following appointment. Further information about UWS policy for degree assessment external examiners is available at:
