The BSc in Paramedic Science programme at Queen Margaret University- Edinburgh (QMU) commenced in September 2020. QMU has a large multi-professional portfolio of programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels providing learning and teaching opportunities from Certificate to Doctorate level within the Scottish Credit Qualifications Framework (SCQF). The BSc Paramedic Science programme is located within the Division of Nursing and Paramedic Science and is supported by the multidisciplinary expertise of staff from across the School of Health Sciences.

We are seeking an External Examiner for the BSc Paramedic Science programme for theory and practice modules at SCQF levels 7, 8 and 9

This programme of study is delivered over three years and facilitates learners to:

  • Develop the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver safe and effective out of hospital care in a range of health settings as a proactive, resilient, autonomous and person-centred member of integrated health and social care teams.
  • Develop necessary values and competencies to apply for and maintain registration as a paramedic with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Our focus is on person-centredness and the development of safe, effective and resilient practitioners who value inclusive, participative and collaborate ways of working.

This programme is structured around core modules and at each level learners visit and revisit concepts and themes at progressively deeper level and in greater complexity. Learners undertake a number of paramedic specific and interprofessional modules in each year of the programme. The external examiner would be primarily responsible for the assessment of the 3rd year core paramedic theory and all practice modules across 3 years.

The modules to be examined include:

Level One
Paramedic practice-based learning 1 20 Credits

Level Two
Paramedic practice-based learning 2 20 Credits

Level Three

Managing complexity in Paramedic practice 40 Credits
Skills for paramedic practice 3 20 Credits
Being a Person-centred Practitioner 20 Credits
Understanding and appraising evidence for practice 20 Credits
Paramedic practice-based learning 3 20 Credits

Learning and teaching approaches include online and face to face lectures and seminars, practical classes and placements. Activities such as case-based approaches, interactive learning, group work, simulation, assist students to draw out the learning potential from their own practice and apply theory to practice.

A range of assessment strategies are utilised including e- portfolios, written examinations, Observed Structured Clinical Assessment (OSCAs) case-based assignments, reflective assignments and presentations .
