Student Leadership

In 2016/17 the Council and the Burdett Trust for Nursing worked in partnership to develop the first ever UK-wide student leadership programme targeted at healthcare students.

Based on the concept of students as co-creators of their own learning, the Student Leadership Programme offers innovative ways for developing leadership in future healthcare professionals. Targeted initially at 150 students of nursing, midwifery and the allied health professional courses across the UK, the programme offers exposure to leadership development through role-modelling, reflection, networking and coaching.

Branded as the #150Leaders, students from the programme developed leadership skills that they took back to their universities, became strong advocates for their professions, engaged in recruitment and retention activities and developed skills in influencing policy and engaged with national strategic agendas. Many have been nominated for national student awards, and a number of them have won for their contribution through their studies.

The Burdett Trust for Nursing concluded its funding of the Student Leadership Programme in 2025.

The lessons learned from the Programme formed the basis of our publication #150Leaders: Fostering Student Leadership. In addition, the Programme has produced a collection of leadership case studies from some of its AHP students, Allied Health students: leading the way.
