External Examiner – AdvanceHE Accredited Art of Learning and Teaching (AFHEA) and (FHEA) modules

Institution:

The University of Surrey School of Health Sciences is looking to recruit a new External Reviewer from the 2026/27 academic year to support modules within the PGCert and MA Education for Health Professionals programme. The School of Health Sciences at the University of Surrey is a vibrant and innovative school, offering a broad range of educational programmes in healthcare. The modules within the programme you would be external reviewer for include:

  • Art of Learning and Teaching (AFHEA)
  • Art of Learning and Teaching (FHEA)

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced external reviewer for our Advance HE accredited Art of Learning and Teaching modules from September 2026 for an initial term of 1 year with potential to extend beyond this. We are looking for someone with a minimum of SFHEA, who ideally has experience in examining against the PSF 2023, but all applications would be welcomed.

For the Art of Learning and Teaching:

This is the capstone module of the PGCert Education for Health Professionals and aims to provide those who are relatively new to teaching in higher education and clinical education with the opportunity to meet the requirements of the PSF 2023, enabling them to develop the knowledge, understanding and practical skills that will lead to reflective practice and enhance the quality of their teaching. Our programme is accredited by Advance HE against PSF 2023 Descriptors 1 and 2.

This 30 credit module is taught across the year with assessments submitted in June and July. For the AFHEA assessment consists of a reflective portfolio of practice, whereas the FHEA assessment consists of the Portfolio and a VIVA. We expect to have 25-35 submissions in total across both modules. This is a new provision, but we expect most students will undertake the AFHEA module. Whilst the assessments form part of a graded assessment, the AdvanceHE aspect is considered pass/fail and the appointed reviewer will be responsible for the AdvanceHE aspect only, working alongside our existing programme external examiner who will be responsible for the academic aspects.

External examiners are required to review and evaluate assessment marking; be a member of the Board of Examiners and attend 1-2 meetings per year, (these are likely to remain virtually online for the foreseeable future); comment and give advice on content, balance and structure of the modules in relation to the PSF2023; and to complete an annual report as part of the University of Surrey’s quality assurance mechanisms. The University requires external examiners to attend a minimum of one Board of Examiners meeting per year.

Experience of external examining would be an advantage but is not essential.

All appointments are subject to meeting the University’s criteria for the appointment of external examiners. The successful applicant would be appointed with effect from 2026/27 for a term of one academic year initially with the potential to extend to four years.
