Skills for Care Partnership
The Council of Deans of Health is working in partnership with Skills for Care to launch and embed the first strategy for social care in practice learning and curriculum of nursing education programmes. Adult social care is a vital and dynamic part of the health and care system, and, with every growing demand, we need to ensure that nursing graduates can see that social care is an exciting and important career option. The partnership involves celebrating the launch of a new social care strategy, supporting the implementation of the with our members and stakeholders, and the developing of the social care network for students and early career nurses.
The partnership with Skills for Care aims to achieve the following objectives:
- Promote the opportunities that social care has to offer with our membership and stakeholders.
- Maintain and grow the quality and capacity of social care practice placements.
- Increase students’ understanding of social care and inspire them to work in the sector.
- Work with our members to help embed the social care placement strategy into the healthcare education sector.
Purpose of Strategy:
The Social Care Nursing Placement Strategy aims to foster stronger connections between students, care providers, employers, the social care workforce, universities and colleges, to enhance and promote understanding and engagement with social care settings and provide sustainable high quality practice placement opportunities.
The strategy sets out the recommendations needed to ensure the future workforce has the knowledge and skills to support population health in England in the very near future as well as to meet the future direction of the 10-year plan for health.
Whilst the strategy is written specifically for adult social care it may have relevance to NHS Primary Care and Community nursing roles, Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) and wider learning environments.
Social Care Students and Early Careers Network
We are developing a network for students and early-career nurses who are interested in, or currently engaged in, placements and careers within the social care sector. The network will be an opportunity to share experiences and learning to enhance professional development but also a supportive and collaborative space to build a collective voice to promote social care nursing.
