The School of Allied Health and Community at the University of Worcester is seeking an experienced External Examiner for our BA (Hons) Social Work and Social Worker (Integrated) Degree apprenticeship programmes.
These two programmes will be delivered in tandem, sharing some modules across each academic year, as well as having some modules taught separately. The EE role will therefore be involved in examining both programmes and supporting the course teams to deliver this new, innovative programme.
The EE usually examines all modules at levels 5 & 6 of the programmes, with some additional oversight of new modules at level 4.
The appointment starts in September 2024 and tenure is for 4 academic years. External Examiners play a central role in the maintenance of the standards of the University’s awards and the currency of the curriculum. They perform this role through:
- The approval of assessment tasks and examination papers
- Discussions with relevant academic staff
- The review of samples of student work on modules within the programmes
- The endorsement of marks to confirm that the marks are an agreed, fully moderated and externally examined set of results
- The submission of annual reports
- Attendance at appropriate boards of examiners
- Agreement to programme modifications
Ideal applicants should possess the following:
- Be a qualified social worker, registered with the professional body, Social Work England
- Have expertise in the design, delivery and assessment of continuing professional development in social work education, as evidenced by their current (or previous) post within a higher education establishment
- Experience in practice education
- Previous experience of external examining is preferred, but if appropriate a suitable mentor will be appointed to support an eligible candidate.
- Have not worked for the University of Worcester during the last five years, or been involved in other approval or validation roles within the University,
Applicants would not usually be a current examiner for more than one other HEI programme at another institution. Applications for the post should be made by a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae and appropriate cover letter and sent to the Course Leader for the BS (Hons) Social work programme, David Palfreyman at d.palfreyman@worc.ac.uk
Applicants should be a member of academic staff at a UK higher education provider, but recently retired individuals are eligible for the role provided that they can provide evidence of continuing involvement in the subject area.
All external examiners must be fluent in the English language and be able to evidence eligibility to work in the UK. Please note that all appointments are subject to verification of eligibility to work in the UK, as per UK Visas and Immigration requirements.
