The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care (NMPC) is based in the heart of central and south London. It includes the Cicely Saunders Institute for Palliative Care, Policy and Rehabilitation, the premier Institute for Palliative Care, bringing together clinical, research and education teams.

We are seeking two External Examiners for our BSc Nursing programme. This course is delivered to qualified nurses both online and in Singapore. The course aims to enable nurses to transform bedside care by developing critical, analytical and evidence-based practice skills to lead improvements in health care quality, safety, access and value.

External Examiner Duties:

  • Assist in the maintenance of King’s College London’s standard of awards and advise if there is a falling below national standards in the subject area.
  • Seek to ensure assessment processes are fair, rigorous and operated equitably.
  • Have regard to the totality of the degree and be involved in award decisions.
  • Comment upon and give approval to all draft examination papers and other forms of assessment.
  • Inspect examination scripts or other assessed material including coursework.
  • Advise whether marking and award classification schemes are consistent with internal and external standards.
  • Adjudicate in cases where internal examiners cannot agree.
  • Recommend appropriate action to ameliorate systematic issues in marking.
  • Attend all Faculty Assessment Sub-Board meetings and approve results and final award recommendations.
  • Report on areas of good practice and key issues identified during the year.


  • To be able to speak authoritatively on academic standards of the programme, Examiners should normally:
  • Hold a current academic appointment in another UK higher education institution, with a minimum of three years’ experience.
  • Have experience as a clinical researcher in an area of research that is relevant to the programme.
  • Hold a UK professional registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) or Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Have experience of the design and operation of assessment.
  • Be able to provide comments about the student learning experience and make suggestions of enhancements.
