The School of Dental, Health and Care Professions at the University of Portsmouth are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified external examiner for the Nursing Non-medical Prescribing course, which is a postgraduate level 7 course.

The course broadly covers the legal, ethical, professional, pharmacology and therapeutics aspects in relation to non-medical prescribing for nurses. It aims to develop an understanding of the scope of individual practice and enhance the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) competencies needed to ensure safe prescribing practices. Current relevant experience in higher education, along with current professional registration, are essential. Applicants should:

  • be actively involved in education and training programmes with experience in assessment of the areas covered by the programme;
  • hold relevant academic and/or professional qualifications to at least the level of the qualification being externally examined, with extensive practitioner experience;
  • meet criteria set by professional, statutory or regulatory bodies;
  • be aware of Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for education; standards for prescribing programmes and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Prescribing Competency Framework

The External Examiner will be required to be present at the Nursing Module Assessment Board and the Board of Examiners’ meetings for the programme (at least one per year) and be available for consultation on assessment and curriculum issues.

All appointments are subject to approval by the University External Examiners Nomination Panel. The University runs regular induction seminars for recently appointed External
Examiners. The aim of the seminars is to introduce External Examiners to the regulations and procedures of the University of Portsmouth, as well as providing an opportunity to meet University staff and other External Examiners. Where relevant, you will also be invited to visit
and attend additional sessions face to face or online.
