External Examiner pre-registration nursing

The College of Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare is seeking to appoint 2 external examiners for our pre-registration nursing programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

These posts cover the following courses:

  • BSc (Hons) Adult/Mental Health/Children’s/Learning Disabilities Nursing (including apprentices) – Levels 4, 5 and 6 – 1 post
  • MSc Adult / Learning Disabilities Nursing (on-campus and blended learning), PG Dip Adult/Mental Health/Learning Disabilities Nursing (including apprentices on PG Dip course) – Level 7 – 1 post

Post 1 – We are excited to be introducing a newly modified curriculum for our BSc (Hons) Nursing course this September. Your remit would include both field specific (adult) nursing modules and generic modules taught across all fields.

Post 2 – This post holder would review our postgraduate, preregistration courses, PG Diploma Nursing and MSc Nursing. Both courses are 2 years duration and at academic level 7.

The PG Dip Nursing course is approved to be delivered as an apprenticeship as well as for fee-paying students. The MSc Nursing is delivered both on campus (adult nursing only) and as blended learning option (Adult and Learning Disabilities fields). You may be asked to review work for both fields of nursing. In the PG Diploma most modules you would be reviewing would be for adult nursing students only.
Both posts would need applicants to have insight into current healthcare practice and nursing education.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced lecturers in nursing. All appointments are subject to the candidate meeting the University’s criteria for appointment. Tenure will normally be for a period of four years.

There are intakes across the two campuses (Brentford and Reading) with the exception of the MSc Nursing (on campus) which is offered only on our Brentford campus. You will be joining a team of external examiners.

As an External Examiner you will be expected to:

  • Have current registration with the NMC as an adult nurse
  • Be employed in Higher Education
  • Scrutinize samples of examination/essay scripts and other assessed materials
  • Attend a minimum of 2 assessment boards a year – these are held online.
  • Review of student’s recognition of prior learning claims.
  • Review new modules in preparation for approval events.
  • Advise on academic misconduct and appeal cases.
  • Submit an annual report to the University Quality Boards.
