External Examiner – Midwifery

The University of Sunderland is developing a new BSC (Hons) Midwifery Practice programme which is due to commence in September 2022 (subject to approval).
We are seeking a suitable qualified midwifery academic to undertake the role of External Examiner. The appointment will be for 4 academic years.

Responsibilities of the Role are:

  • Assuring the standards of our awards in comparison to the sector and relevant external reference points.
  • Assuring the quality of the assessment process. This includes moderation of assessment briefs, moderation of marked work (including feedback to the module leader prior to the Assessment Board) and attendance at the annual programme assessment board.
  • Providing comment on course content, balance and structure and on modes of teaching, learning and assessment, to support ongoing development of the curriculum. External examiners are asked to review curriculum modifications to modules and programmes at FHEQ Level 5 and above. Adherence to NMC (2019) Standards of Proficiency for Midwives.
  • Ensuring equivalency of awards for collaborative provision.
  • External examiners are also required to provide an annual report following the Programme Assessment Board.

Essential Requirements:

  • Registration as a Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council with relevant subject knowledge and experience as a Midwife
  • A Master’s Degree in a relevant subject
  • Applicants should have recently been employed (or are still employed) within a university appointment
  • Applicants must not have been a University of Sunderland examiner within the last five years
  • Knowledge of relevant UK-sector external reference points for academic standards and quality assurance and enhancement: QAA Quality Code, level descriptors
  • Awareness of relevant current developments in Midwifery relevant to programme and mod-ule design and learning, teaching and assessment

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience of external examining
  • Professional Advocate qualification and experience working in this role
