Chief External Examiner Required for the School of Health and Social Wellbeing

The University of the West of England Bristol are seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced academic staff for the role of Chief External Examiner within the School of Health and Social Wellbeing, part of the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences. Applicants should have experience of external examining and senior leadership in an academic setting, for example Associate Dean, Head of School/Department or equivalent. The successful applicant will have responsibility for overseeing a portfolio of awards at both undergraduate and postgraduate level across a wide range of subject areas including: Allied Health Professions, Nursing, Midwifery, Public and Environmental Health, Social Work and Music Therapy. The Chief External Examiner role does not have direct responsibility for individual modules and does not involve reviewing samples of student work. Attendance/engagement at award boards is expected.

The main roles of the Chief External Examiner are:

  • To ensure that all assessments are conducted in accordance with university regulations;
  • To ensure that the responsibilities of the award board relating to a student’s eligibility for an award are fully and properly discharged;
  • To consider/participate in discussions and report on programme and cohort performance;
  • To ensure that Award Board recommendations have been reached by means consistent with the University’s requirements and normal practice in higher education;
  • To participate as required in any reviews of decisions about individual students’ awards;
  • To report to the University on the effectiveness of the assessment and the conduct of the examining board and any matters arising in accordance with the University’s requirements for such reports;
  • To carry additional responsibility for compliance to Professional, Statutory or Regulatory Body requirements.

The appointment shall be for a period of four years commencing 1st October 2022.
