This BACP-accredited postgraduate programme prepares students for professional practice as counsellors and psychotherapists in a variety of settings. It attracts a diverse and committed student body, including those entering the profession and experienced practitioners from related fields. The course is rooted in a relational humanistic approach underpinned by a ‘not knowing’ philosophy, fostering curiosity, openness, and collaborative meaning-making between therapist and client. Students are supported to develop deep self-awareness, reflexivity, and a critical understanding of theory, research, and practice.
The successful applicant will join a supportive external examining team and will be responsible for a range of modules across both years of the programme, including those focusing on humanistic theory, professional practice, and research.
We are seeking to appoint an individual who holds a master’s degree or doctorate; has a strong background in psychotherapy and counselling education; is a BACP-accredited or UKCP-registered practitioner (or equivalent); has a track record of scholarly activity; and is working within a Higher Education institution. Previous experience as an external examiner is desirable but not essential.
The tenure of appointment is normally for four years, subject to approval by the Faculty Taught Student Education Committee. The successful candidate will have access to a range of materials and support to familiarise themselves with the role at Leeds, and there will be opportunities to meet the teaching team. Additional support is available for those new to the role.
The programme operates within the School’s two-tier examination board system, comprising Module Assessment Boards and the School Progression and Awards Board (SPAB). External examiners are full members of these committees, required to attend at least one SPAB meeting per year, and to be available for consultation on assessment and curriculum matters.
The School uses GradeMark for assessment, so the examiner will review student work and feedback online.
