CoDH writes to the final Conservative leadership candidates

20 July 2022

The Council of Deans of Health has written to the final two candidates remaining in the Conservative leadership election, Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, one of whom will be our next Prime Minister.

We explained the important work our members undertake in delivering the future healthcare workforce and set out their central role in delivering the 50,000 nurses target the contenders are still committed to delivering. We highlighted the impressive breadth of our membership and offered our support in future policy development, including on simulated learning investment and regulatory approach.

The Council also highlighted the challenges our sector faces with an ageing workforce that is not growing enough to keep up with a surge in student numbers and the acute issues students, staff and institutions face with the cost-of-living crisis.

We will continue to follow the leadership election closely – assessing policy positions and the likely ministerial teams either candidate will put-together. The Council looks forward to working with whoever wins the election and will continue to advocate for our members throughout the vote.
