The NMC launched a consultation on changes to their standards for the training of nurses and midwives. The consultation sought views on two proposals:
- Removal of the mandatory maximum time limits allowed for the completion of approved pre and post-registration nursing and midwifery programmes.
- Approved education institutions (AEIs) should decide the length of their courses and make reasonable adjustments to this in individual cases where students may have specific needs.
The NMC will present the consultation findings to their Council with a recommendation on how to proceed. Should the proposals be accepted, the NMC would remove the completion time limits from the standards and informs AEIs of this in time for the 2015-2016 academic year.
